Terms of service
These terms are the agreement between you and [LEGAL ENTITY NAME] ( “we”, “us”), who operate Mooring at mooring.email. By creating an account or using the service you accept them. If you don’t, please don’t use the service.
1. What the service is
Mooring hosts mailboxes on domain names that you already own. That includes storage of your mail, access over standard protocols such as IMAP, POP, SMTP, CalDAV and CardDAV, a webmail interface, and a control panel for setting up DNS and checking that it is correct.
The service is early and is offered on an invite-only basis while we build it out. Features may change or be withdrawn, and we may reset accounts during this period. Do not rely on it as the only home for mail you cannot afford to lose, and keep your own copies of anything important.
2. Eligibility and accounts
- You must be at least 16 years old and able to enter into a contract.
- Accounts are created with an invite code while signups are closed. You may not sell, publish or share invite codes.
- Unless we agree otherwise, an account covers one domain and one mailbox. We may raise those limits for individual accounts.
- You are responsible for your password and for anything done through your account. Tell us promptly at [email protected] if you think it has been compromised.
- One person or organisation, one account. Creating extra accounts to get around limits is a breach of these terms.
3. Your domain and your DNS
You must own or otherwise control any domain you add, and you are responsible for the DNS changes our setup guide asks you to make.
Pointing your MX records at us moves your inbound mail away from wherever it goes today. If you currently use forwarding, another mail host, or a service such as Cloudflare Email Routing, that arrangement will stop working when you switch, and mail sent during a misconfiguration can bounce or be lost. Check the setup wizard reports every record as correct before you rely on the mailbox.
You keep ownership of your domain and your mail. We claim no rights over either beyond what we need to run the service for you.
4. Acceptable use
Your use of the service is subject to our acceptable use policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: no spam, no phishing, no malware, nothing illegal. Mail providers share the consequences of each other’s bad senders, so we enforce it strictly.
5. Availability
We aim to keep the service running and to give notice of planned maintenance where we reasonably can, but while the service is free and invite-only we offer no uptime guarantee, no service level agreement and no compensation for downtime.
6. Charges
The service is currently free. If we introduce charges we will give you at least 30 days’ notice by email before they apply to your account, and you may close your account instead of paying. We will never start charging for a period you have already used.
7. Suspension and termination
- You may close your account at any time by emailing [email protected].
- We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms or the acceptable use policy. Where the breach involves spam, phishing, malware or illegal content we may act immediately and without notice, because the harm is ongoing.
- We may also close accounts, with at least 30 days’ notice, if we discontinue the service.
- After closure we delete your data as described in the privacy policy. Export anything you want to keep first.
8. Liability
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.
Subject to that, and because the service is provided free of charge, we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business, loss of goodwill, or for indirect or consequential loss; and our total liability to you for all claims in any twelve-month period is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in that period and £100.
The service is provided “as is”. We do not warrant that mail will always be delivered, that it will never be delayed, or that third-party providers will accept mail sent from our servers.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you we will email the address on your account at least 14 days beforehand. Carrying on using the service after a change takes effect means you accept it.
10. Law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring proceedings there.
